As in previous years, Transforma Insights is undertaking its review of the IoT strategies of major Communications Service Providers (press release for last year's report here). As part of the research we collect quantitative data on connections, revenue and other stats. The chart below shows the evolution of connections from 2010 to Q2 2021.

1.55 billion IoT connections

The headline IoT connection figure of 1.55 billion represents an increase of 6% during Q2 2021. That's the largest quarterly rise since Q4 2019. In Q2 2020 the figure was just 0.5%.

NB - the chart above will automatically update as we revise numbers, so may go beyond Q2 2021 and have slightly different figures depending on when you are viewing it.

China dominates IoT connections

The three Chinese operators continue to dominate the world market based on very large numbers of connections in their domestic market. China is two-thirds of all connections. Beyond those three, Vodafone retains its crown as the next biggest operator with 130 million connections, followed by AT&T, Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica and Orange.
