Artificial Intelligence technologies are evolving quickly, and regulators are trying to keep up with a flurry of initiatives around the world in recent months. In this report we focus on draft regulations, or statements of intent, published by regulators in China, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States of America (USA).

In recent years the market for wireless technologies that can support Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) connections has veered towards an unhealthy level of concentration. With challenges faced by Sigfox (which eventually succumbed to bankruptcy in early 2022) the market for LPWA connectivity was essentially left to mMTC offerings from cellular operators (NB-IoT and LTE-M) and LoRaWAN, with the LoRaWAN ecosystem focussing to a great extent on campus-scale networks rather than full wide area coverage. This situation left potential end-user adopters with few choices and little competition between vendors on price. The lack of options in the market in recent years has given rise to a number of technologies that each seek to address some part of the LPWA market, and often also seek to support IoT applications that require higher-speed connections. In this report we examine five such technologies: Wi-SUN, Wireless MBus, mioty, NR+, and Wi-Fi HaLow.

The Connectivity Management Platform (CMP) is one of the key underlying pieces of middleware used by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), and even some enterprises wishing to act as their own operator, to manage connections, handling activation/deactivation, billing, analytics, reporting and various other functions. This part of IoT is going through something of a period of transition. This report provides Transforma Insights' view of the changing dynamics of the IoT Connectivity Management Platform (CMP) space, looking at the evolving features and functionality required of 'Thin' and 'Thick' CMP variants, and profiling 16 of the key vendors.

The volumes of cellular-based IoT connections being sold in China dwarf that of the rest of the world, with the three mobile operators China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom claiming the top three spots as the world’s biggest IoT Communications Service Providers (CSPs), at least by volume of connections. And that is despite doing very little business outside of China. Every year, Transforma Insights produces its Communications Service Provider IoT Peer Benchmarking 2023 report, looking at the capabilities of CSPs in addressing the global IoT opportunity. That report this year included 23 MNOs and MVNOs but excluded the three Chinese market leaders. Typically the Chinese players have been almost exclusively focused on the domestic market, meaning that they don’t come onto the radar for the global report. However, their sheer scale, and the importance of the Chinese market, mean that we cannot ignore them. In this report we assess the capabilities of the three major CSPs in China in addressing IoT, including assessment of their organisational structure, networks, middleware platforms, data analytics, vertical solutions and overall approach to the market. We also assess their performance relative to CSPs in other parts of the world.

ChatGPT has recently hit the headlines with the launch of prototype services in November 2022, a rumoured USD10 billion investment from Microsoft in January 2023 and the launch of enhanced services in March 2023. The March 2023 release is a significant improvement on that launched in November 2022 and, for instance, it is claimed that the latest engine scores in the 90th percentile in exams for entry into the US legal profession, whereas the version released in November 2022 scores in the 10th percentile. The latest version of ChatGPT can also describe images and communicate their meaning and context. In this report we examine the implications from the perspective of enterprise digital transformation.

This report is a primer on how ultra-wideband (UWB) is evolving. It examines the IEEE802.15.4 standard based on its current status, description and, consumer and enterprise use-cases. The report deep-dives into the IEEE802.15.4z standard for IR-UWB and then defines the various communication methods used by the technology for broadcasting messages.

In February and March 2023 Transforma Insights analysts attended Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and Embedded World in Nuremberg, two of the key IoT events of the year. The key takeaway from the two events was that the Internet of Things is going through a period of pronounced transition. In many different areas it is evolving from a relatively stable, established environment 3-5 years ago towards another equally stable state in another 3-5 years, but with a period of uncertainty and changing dynamics in between. In this report we explore those key evolution areas that were the leading IoT-related themes at the two events. This encompasses topics as diverse as the evolution from 2G/3G to mMTC, the changing Connectivity Management Platform landscape, changing approaches to addressing multi-country connectivity, hardware bundling, and regulation. It also looks at the reasons why some major technology vendors are seemingly exiting IoT.
