This report examines the transition occurring in the way Internet of Things solutions are developed. The IoT is moving from a one-size-fits-all approach built on technologies that were not developed with the constraints of IoT in mind, to a 'Connected-by-Design' approach, reflecting the unique requirements of each IoT use case, complexity of the mix of components, and where careful consideration is given to how all the elements are optimised, particularly connectivity.

This report examines digital transformation (DX) in the Agriculture sector, enabled by the key technology groups that are the focus of Transforma Insights’ research. It focuses on the use of DX from harvest to storage. Digital technologies hold tremendous potential to transform the Agriculture sector by improving the efficiency of farming methods, resulting in better utilisation of resources and energy. The core driver behind rising adoption of digital technologies in this sector is the need for sustainable and consistent production, helping the industry overcome the challenge of high food demand with limited resources (especially water and land), climate change and increasing cost of labour and raw materials.

Evolving IoT threat landscape necessitates a holistic approach to security
- Internet of Things

The rapidly evolving IoT security threat landscape necessitates enterprises finding trusted partners to mitigate risks across the end-point, network, transport, cloud/data and application layers. This report provides enterprises with a view on the evolving IoT security landscape and the best mechanisms for mitigating the risk and impact of security threats. It starts with the results of Transforma Insights’ recent IoT Connectivity Survey, demonstrating how critical security is considered to be. The following sections examine the ways in which the security threat is evolving, a dive into some of the legislation affecting IoT security, and a topology of IoT security, identifying the various types of security requirements. The final sections provide enterprises with a guide to how security considerations need to be stitched into their IoT deployments, and an explanation of why Transforma Insights believes that there is a need for something called ‘IoT Security-as-a-Service’ to mitigate growing and evolving IoT threats.

In recent years the market for wireless technologies that can support Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) connections has veered towards an unhealthy level of concentration. With challenges faced by Sigfox (which eventually succumbed to bankruptcy in early 2022) the market for LPWA connectivity was essentially left to mMTC offerings from cellular operators (NB-IoT and LTE-M) and LoRaWAN, with the LoRaWAN ecosystem focussing to a great extent on campus-scale networks rather than full wide area coverage. This situation left potential end-user adopters with few choices and little competition between vendors on price. The lack of options in the market in recent years has given rise to a number of technologies that each seek to address some part of the LPWA market, and often also seek to support IoT applications that require higher-speed connections. In this report we examine five such technologies: Wi-SUN, Wireless MBus, mioty, NR+, and Wi-Fi HaLow.
