What’s the prognosis for IBM as it rolls the dice again with a new strategic pivot?

In October 2020 IBM announced that it would be divesting its IT infrastructure business in order to focus on its “open hybrid cloud platform and AI capabilities”. In the last few years, while making significant progress in some technology areas, IBM has somewhat missed the boat in others, notably cloud. Claims of generating 27% of revenue from cloud today are somewhat questionable. This report examines the motivations behind making such a move, its likely impact on the market, the reasons for IBM’s ‘cloud-washing’ of revenue, its potential to make the shift from services to product company, and the prognosis for the company after the split, particularly in the context of efforts to seize the new cloud-to-edge opportunity.

Any enterprise considering developing and deploying an IoT solution will, at some point, more than likely consider options to use an IoT AEP (Application Enablement Platform) to support the development. At Transforma Insights, we think that that’s a sensible thing to do, but also that there’s more to the story than simply picking an AEP that appears ‘top right’ in a matrix of (say) technical capabilities vs ability to deploy. In this report we draw on extensive analysis of IoT platforms undertaken for our IoT Platform Peer Benchmarking Report to make recommendations for enterprises on the considerations they should have in mind when selecting an AEP, including solution and industry match, capabilities and commercial terms.

Anyone who engages with IoT solution specification or development will quickly realise that the Internet of Things is a very diverse place and the requirements of different applications will necessitate very different approaches. In this Key Topic Insight Report we examine some key aspects of this diversity, from simple deployment parameters through to questions of whether the application is a competitive differentiator and the depth of enterprise integration. The reason for the analysis is that these kinds of variations often will have significant implications for how IoT solutions are procured and delivered, including questions of whether to build or buy, and how to establish project team competencies.

Connecting IoT applications via cellular connectivity requires enterprises to select from one of a few connectivity provider, either network operators such as AT&T and Vodafone, or virtual network operators such as Aeris or KORE. The capabilities of these suppliers vary significantly. They all have different technical capabilities, geographical coverage, and vertical competencies, which will be of varying importance depending on the specifics of the implementation. This report provides would-be buyers of cellular IoT connectivity with guidelines for how to select the right providers to short-list for RFPs.
