The concepts of Data Exchanges, Data Brokers and related functions are becoming increasingly important in the context of AI, IoT and digitalisation as organisations seek to augment data that is available internally within the organisation with data sourced from third parties to support digitally transformed business processes.
This report discusses the concept of Data Intermediaries, including Data Exchanges that contract to provide data to Data Consumers, and Data Brokers that facilitate arrangements between Data Suppliers and Data Consumers. We consider the perspective of a number of actors that might participate in such an arrangement, and we discuss the implications of these perspectives for Data Intermediaries and conclude that the concept of a Data Exchange might be limited to certain information types and certain contexts only, whilst the concept of Data Brokerage will become more widely adopted.
