This report ranks the top 30+ operator groups by numbers of IoT connections, including commentary on the dominance of China, wafer-thin average-revenue-per-connection and the impact of COVID-19.

There is always lots of interest in how many IoT connections are declared by mobile network operators, not least because it is one of the few quantitative measures of success. In recent years the breathtaking metric has been the billion plus connections reported in China, with an astounding growth rate.

In this report we present figures for connection growth for over 30 global operators, for the last 10 years, based on published figures and Transforma Insights’ informed interpolation. This provides a ranking of connections and a guide to how fast the global market for cellular connectivity is growing. We also identify some discrepancies in reported numbers and examine the less often considered metric of revenue per connection and what these things tell us about the state of the market. Furthermore, there is consideration of the impact of COVID-19 on selected operators’ figures.
