In this webinar Matt Hatton was joined by Daan de Wijs, Head of Business Development for rSIM at CSL Group, to discuss what they saw at MWC 2026 in the context of the key trends in IoT connectivity for 2026.
A few of the trends that bubbled up and formed a big part of discussions included:
The current state of a number of new technologies just about reaching maturity, including SGP.32 remote SIM provisioning, NTN satellite and 5G SA. Are they mature enough to make a difference and how do they change the market landscape?
Delivering secure, resilient and robust connectivity. The provision of cellular-based connectivity continues to be dogged by outages which can be disastrous for critical applications. We looked for capabilities that help connectivity providers deliver more robust and resilient connectivity, such as with rSIM. And the subject of post-quantum cryptography came up quite a few times too.
Physical AI. Yes, a new term for IoT (or something approaching it). It’s impossible to avoid discussion of AI in IoT, whether it’s as a driver for adoption – with IoT as the eyes and ears of AI – or for streamlining of operations or enhancing anomaly detection. There was more than a handful of uses of the term Physical AI to describe IoT. What does it all mean?
Global infrastructure and the demands for localisation. In part driven by the demands of (physical) AI, there's ever more requirements for distributed, compliant and resilient infrastructure to support it.
The challenge of regulation. The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) cropped up in quite a few conversations. And that's just part of a wider - and increasingly complex - compliance landscape.
Doubling down on differentiators. The main opportunity at MWC is to triangulate views of the market. One of the big themes from discussions with connectivity providers was how they were (finally?) fully recognising that they need to focus on where they have a competitive advantage over their rivals. What does that mean for the competitive landscape?
As part of the webinar Daan shared an update on rSIM, including deep-dive analysis of real, anonymised outage events from the last 18 months, a comparison of rSIM with multi-IMSI, the implications of rSIM for enterprises and mobile network operators, and upcoming rSIM developments.
