This report looks at the increasingly vibrant IoT MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) landscape. It includes analysis and profiles of the capabilities of 175 MVNOs around the world, including profiles of each. Based on that analysis we draw some conclusions on the current state of the IoT MVNO market landscape. We answer a series of important questions: who are the leading IoT MVNOs, how important are MVNOs, what are MNO attitudes to MVNOs, and what are MVNOs using to effectively differentiate themselves?

Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) consist of hardware and software components that communicate information to operators and allow user inputs to be translated into commands for machines. This is a very broad definition, and encompasses many approaches ranging from the use of simple mechanical switches through to natural language processing. In this Forecast Insight Report we focus on dedicated devices that support HMI, often associated with some level of Augmented Reality (AR). The focus is on quantitative analysis, examining numbers of HMI devices across verticals and geographies, and in different contexts. For further discussion of the market for HMI propositions, including analysis of key market trends, see the HMI Technology Insight Report.

Price erosion in cellular-based IoT connectivity is happening fast. Transforma Insights believes that there is a very good chance that MNOs and MVNOs will within the next 5 years be faced with ‘$1 IoT’, i.e. the prevailing price for IoT connectivity for most applications will be USD1 per year. The implications of such a scenario will be substantial. It will facilitate the use of cellular in a wider range of applications, accelerating adoption. At the same time it will demand a radical change in how cellular connectivity is provisioned, sold and supported, and will trigger a significant change in MNO and MVNO strategies. This report explores the likelihood of such a radical pricing scenario, the implications for adoption, and the ways in which connectivity providers will need to adapt to reflect the changing dynamics.

During the course of the 2010s many countries around the world became much more active in enforcing rules and regulations that prevent cellular connections from an overseas operator existing in a state of ‘permanent roaming’ in their country. Historically this was a relatively large proportion of cellular IoT connections as enterprises contracted with a single connectivity provider to support a global estate of devices using well-established worldwide inter-carrier roaming agreements. Typically, relying of roaming data isn’t cheap, but for devices generating only a few megabytes of data it was often viable. In the last decade the rules have become much stricter, with regulators (and operators) enforcing rules. This report reviews the current situation with regard to permanent roaming and offers suggestions for enterprises and operators about how to mitigate the issue.
