Data Brokers are likely to outshine Data Exchanges
- AI
- Data Broker
- Data Exchange
- Data Intermediary
- Data Sharing
- IoT
- Internet of Things
The concepts of Data Exchanges, Data Brokers and related functions are becoming increasingly important in the context of AI, IoT and digitalisation as organisations seek to augment data that is available internally within the organisation with data sourced from third parties to support digitally transformed business processes. This report discusses the concept of Data Intermediaries, including Data Exchanges that contract to provide data to Data Consumers, and Data Brokers that facilitate arrangements between Data Suppliers and Data Consumers. We consider the perspective of a number of actors that might participate in such an arrangement, and we discuss the implications of these perspectives for Data Intermediaries and conclude that the concept of a Data Exchange might be limited to certain information types and certain contexts only, whilst the concept of Data Brokerage will become more widely adopted.
Analysis of leading players in Data Sharing illustrate that this is an early-stage market

This report profiles the activities of a range of leading providers in the data exchange space. It includes a summary of the activity of leading players based on the kinds of information shared, and how, and also more detailed information about the data exchange capabilities of each player. Most of the players profiled have some kind of market or vertical focus, with relatively few aiming to offer full Data Exchange style capabilities that include the monetisation of client data.
