In the report ‘eSIM: a guide for enterprise adopters’ (September, 2021) we examined the background to eSIM, remote SIM provisioning and subscription management; what it is and what benefits it brings. In this report we look at the market impact. Where has it been adopted and by whom? What is the impact on demand? What are the implications of the availability of this technology for the commercial models of cellular-based IoT?

The topic of embedded SIM (eSIM) has been a prominent one in the Internet of Things (IoT) for the last 5 years, promising a fundamental change in how cellular-based connectivity is delivered. This report provides a background on eSIM, looking at the changing form factors of physical devices, the resultant need for remote SIM provisioning (RSP) and how that works, and the commercial implications.

During the course of the 2010s many countries around the world became much more active in enforcing rules and regulations that prevent cellular connections from an overseas operator existing in a state of ‘permanent roaming’ in their country. Historically this was a relatively large proportion of cellular IoT connections as enterprises contracted with a single connectivity provider to support a global estate of devices using well-established worldwide inter-carrier roaming agreements. Typically, relying of roaming data isn’t cheap, but for devices generating only a few megabytes of data it was often viable. In the last decade the rules have become much stricter, with regulators (and operators) enforcing rules. This report reviews the current situation with regard to permanent roaming and offers suggestions for enterprises and operators about how to mitigate the issue.

The ‘Thin IoT’ stack describes a set of technologies explicitly developed to be optimised for use in constrained environments. This report comprises sections on all five of the elements of the Thin IoT stack, identifying the key technologies that will help optimise any IoT deployment for constrained environments (or just reduce the cost). The five are: device hardware, device software, networking, middleware, and edge computing.
