In particular it is seen as one of the most immediate opportunities associated with 5G. The last twelve months has also seen an increasing availability of spectrum that will be useful for MPNs.                     Mobile Private Networks (MPNs) have attracted a lot of attention over the last two years as a growth opportunity for mobile network operators and infrastructure vendors. Some of the early deployments have focused on factories and ports but there are dozens of potential campus-type locations where there will be some value associated with a more secure and reliable private network using licensed spectrum. This report examines the use cases for which MPNs will be deployed, including connected workers, site security, connected assets, robotic processes, and transportation. It also looks very closely at the various deployment scenarios and the likely verticals into which MPNs will deployed, including manufacturing, transportation, supply chain, oil & gas, education and many more. In particular, it focuses on those deployments where the MPNs will be used to facilitate new Internet of Things (IoT) applications. It also includes Transforma Insights’ forecast for the number of IoT connections that will be supported by private networks, and in which verticals.                       The topic of mobile private networks (MPNs) has attracted increasing attention during 2020 thanks to the arrival of 5G and the increasing availability of dedicated spectrum. In many cases these will be used to support sophisticated IoT use cases in manufacturing, transportation, energy and agriculture. There is an immediate and substantial opportunity associated with the provision of MPNs but the business model for delivering them remains uncertain. There are a number of different possible deployment models for such networks, and several permutations for the commercial arrangements between the various stakeholders (e.g. enterprise, infrastructure vendor, and mobile network operator) for delivering them. This report examines all of the various participants in providing MPNs and how their internal dynamics and interrelationships are likely to evolve in the next 5-10 years.                         The ‘IoT Connectivity Support Platform’ is a critical piece of middleware deployed by Communications Service Providers (CSPs) to handle the activation, management and billing for the cellular connectivity upon which IoT devices rely. The vendor market is dominated by two main third-party vendors (Cisco and Ericsson). Many CSPs have their own in-house developed capabilities which are either their exclusive platform (as is the case with Verizon and Vodafone) or which are used alongside those of third parties (as done by Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica). A recent report ‘Communications Service Provider (CSP) IoT Peer Benchmarking 2020’ (September, 2020) examined the strategies of ten leading connectivity providers for IoT. Each profile contained a Middleware section which included, amongst other things, an examination of each’s Connectivity Support Platform strategy. This report expands upon those sections, looking at the emerging trends for Connectivity Support Platforms, including the changing dynamics for multi-sourcing of platforms, their increasingly cloud-native nature, the impact of API-ification, the arrival of 5G, OpenRAN and eUICC, and changing commercial models.
