The IoT technology landscape is increasingly being defined by its ability to address large numbers of devices in increasingly inhospitable environments by virtue of slimming down the features and functionality of the offering to make it more appropriate. Last year, we at Transforma Insights published a report on what we termed the ‘Thin IoT stack’. The report examined the arrival of a set of technologies across the IoT stack that are specifically aimed at coping with dealing with the constraints of power, location, space, processing and several other factors that will be increasingly common in a large volume of IoT deployments. The implications of this shift will be felt widely across all aspects of how IoT is deployed, says Matt Hatton, founding partner, Transforma Insights.

The LoRa Alliance’s LoRaWAN World Expo took place on 6th and 7th July in Paris. This is the event that was initially scheduled for June 2020 but suffered from delays due to Covid. Apparently 1,200 registered for the conference and actual attendance was a little over 1,000. So, what was interesting at the LoRaWAN World Expo 2022?

The use of IoT hardware and software applications will have a very positive impact on global sustainability but the trend masks significant variations between use cases, and over the lifecycle of the device. This was one conclusion from a recent report from Transforma Insights, ‘On balance, IoT is very beneficial from a sustainability perspective’. The report considers the overall sustainability implications of the deployment of IoT, including analysis of the impact on electricity consumption, (hydrocarbon) fuel consumption, water consumption, and CO2 emissions.

1NCE, a company based in Cologne, Germany, that is aiming to provide flat-rate IoT connectivity and roaming on a global basis, has drawn a new equity investment from Japan’s SoftBank Corp., which also signed an exclusive deal to distribute 1NCE’s services in 19 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Cologne-based maker of managed connectivity services for IoT devices 1NCE has announced that it’s signed a deal with Japan’s SoftBank Corp. that will see the latter selling 1NCE IoT services exclusively in 19 APAC markets.

It has been a month since Unabiz was declared the new owner of IoT tech provider and network operator Sigfox. And it has been a couple of weeks (such is the workload) since Enterprise IoT Insights was passed a shareholders’ note from the Sigfox legal team, signed on behalf of incumbent chief exec Jeremy Prince, to state the main tech unit, Sigfox SA, went for just €3.3 million in the end – and the French network, Sigfox SAS, went for only €300,000. It is unclear from the letter whether the €3.3 million fee included the €300,000 for Sigfox SAS, as well.
