The Covid pandemic of 2020/21 has acted as a force for change for many enterprise sectors and functions, change that might otherwise have taken decades. This rapid shift has created challenges and opportunities.

Leading technology industry analyst firm Transforma Insights has launched the Transforma Insights User Group, a year-round, engaged and informed, subscription-based member community, connecting technology end-users, navigating their digital transformation journey.

According to research from Transforma Insights, the world’s active IoT device count is expected to grow from 7.6 billion at the end of 2019 to 24.1 billion by 2030.

“The bottom line is, at the moment everything is very fragmented. You’ve got quite a lot of different approaches and different technologies being rolled out,” says Matt Hatton, Founding Partner of Transforma Insights, a research firm tracking the progress of digital transformation, including IoT.

CES this year was, of course, a very different beast from usual. However, despite being entirely virtual there was a flurry of interesting and noteworthy announcements from the ‘show’. The humble QR code has been adopted by the LoRa Alliance to speed up and simplify IoT device provisioning. The industry group, which promotes the LoRa LPWAN standard, said its new QR codes can be printed on IoT devices, and carry the required device and vendor information in a format that can be readily entered into a network management system, thereby enabling zero-touch onboarding.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is on an explosive growth trajectory. According to Transforma Insights, the number of IoT-connected devices is projected to increase to 24.1 billion worldwide by 2030. That's almost a three-fold increase from 2019.
